Attention Current Sophomores and Juniors:

High schoolers across the state will have the chance to take college-level courses ranging from asteroid disasters to data science through a University of Illinois program next school year.

U of I officials said the new Dual Credit Learning Accelerator initiative will bring four dual-credit courses to classrooms around Illinois. This includes:

ASTR 150: Killer-Skies: Astro-Disaster

MACS 100: Introduction to Popular TV and Movies

SPED 117: The Culture of Disability

CS/STAT 107: Data Science Discovery

The classes will be available at no cost to students and the funding for the program comes from the American Talent Initiative IDEAS grant. Lisa Anderson, the director of the Office of Online Learning and co-author of the grant, came to the U of I hoping to bring these opportunities to students at public schools throughout the state.

Please see Mrs. Lowry by January 16th to get your name on the list.

Attention Bluestreak Families with Student Athletes:

Several IHSA proposals were recently approved that will significantly impact the spring and summer schedules and start of seasons. We want to make sure families are aware as early as possible, so spring and summer plans can be adjusted accordingly.
IHSA Softball season change: practices may now begin on February 23, 2026, and contests on March 9, 2026. This will go into effect for the 2026 season.
Change to IHSA Dead Week: The IHSA has also moved Dead Week for All Sports to June 29 – July 5, 2026.
• This aligns with 4th of July week
• The week that was previously considered “dead week” in August will now be the start of football activities due to the earlier season start.

With the cold temperatures and a snowy playground keeping us inside, we found fun with a school-wide coloring contest! One winner from each classroom was chosen to receive a special treat, and the creativity was amazing! We also drew our December Brain Buster winners and loved celebrating our students’ hard work and perseverance. To top it all off, we had a very special helper join us for the end-of-the-day announcements. Snow or shine, MES knows how to make the most of the day and celebrate our Bluestreaks! 💙✨

Mrs. Young's first graders have been counting their way to Christmas break and spreading lots of holiday cheer along the way! Today, they topped off their learning with a tasty Christmas tree snack that was as fun to make as it was to eat. 🎄😋 Hands were busy, smiles were bright, and our classroom was full of Christmas magic! ❤️💚 We love learning together at MES—especially when it’s sprinkled with a little holiday joy! 🎁

Christmas Break
Anyone who knows a Bluestreak knows we’re anything but Grinches! However, today our students sported their best Grinchy gear and colors of green. Our students were surprised with a special gift from Gertie Goose,a school movie and delicious popcorn to celebrate their hard work this semester. There’s nothing quite like a movie in the gym and some yummy popcorn to start the week off right! This morning, students were thrilled, shocked, and overly excited to be greeted by none other than The Grinch and Cindy Lou Who themselves — what a festive way to start the day! (Thank you to Jared and Bri Lowry for setting this up for our kids). Despite the fun, our students stayed focused, making up spelling tests, tackling Brain Buster math fluency challenges, and wrapping up research projects and reports. We sure know how to work hard and have fun at the same time! A huge thank you also goes out for the generous donation of Hot Hands for our morning greeters, who help students safely get from the parking lot into the building each day. We’re eager to keep the learning — and celebrating — going strong all week! 💙

We hope everyone had a safe and warm snow day on Friday. We’re excited to kick off the week with lots of fun planned as we head into our last full week before Christmas break — even the Grinch couldn’t steal our excitement! Reminder: Tomorrow is Grinch Day! Students are invited to wear their best Grinch green or Whoville-style outfits. Let’s see if we can make the Grinch’s heart grow just a little bigger. 💗 We’re looking forward to a great week!
